Stuck at lever

I have the lever which as far as I can tell goes on the machine in the attic, but can't apply it. I just get the red X when I try. Have I missed a needed action or item? I found a Steam walkthrough that just says, "Use the lever on the electronic device", which sounds like I don't need anything more, but maybe the walkthrough is incomplete or I'm mixed up in some other way?

I'm playing on Android, if that makes a difference.

I have the same issue. Playing on iPad. Looked at walk through and should work but doesn't.
